Cat spraying is one of the most difficult cat behaviors to not only correct but also, it's very hard to get rid of the smell - which leads to a pattern of behavior where the cat then resprays the area because he can smell it. (And I use the male pronoun "he" because this is typically a male behavior - althought female cats can spray as well.)
The behavior of cat spraying is the top reason that people get rid of their cats (or euthanize them). Ugh...so sad.
Like I said, it's a difficult problem - but not a hopeless one.
If you're at the point where you need a gas mask...you're in the right spot.
Here's some links on a page I did (with resources) for help with this cat spraying behavior problem. (And remember it can also be health problem - any time your cat changes behavior, get him or her to the vet for a check-up.)
